In 1982, West Mesquite began competing as a varsity program, but unlike its MISD neighbors, it has always remained one classification lower, meaning they rarely squared off with their crosstown mates.
That changed in 1990 when Poteet opened its doors.
Like the Wranglers, the Pirates have always competed at a lower classification and the two teams met up in the season finale for what would be one of the more memorable meetings of the series, with West Mesquite edging out a 14-13 victory.
But as much as it means to walk off the field with a victory, these games are also about reunions.
These head-to-head match-ups attract not only alumni from each school, but also former players, who return to reminisce and share stories with the current players of what their time during high school meant to them.
They are rivalry games that bring out a little extra in what happens on the field, as well as off of it.
